How to Choose the Right Fireplace for your Home

The winter chill has well and truly hit, so keep your family warm with the latest in fireplace design and technology. Whether you’re looking for a wood or gas fireplace, we have a range of options to choose from to suit almost any installation. Nothing beats the warmth and romance of a fireplace.

When it comes to gas, there is a wide variety of styles and designs to choose from. The first decision in choosing a gas fireplace is deciding between an open or closed style. The key difference between open and closed gas units is that open gas fireplaces are considered more decorative as they only emit moderate radiant heat, and require ventilation in the room. Using a Jetmaster universal box, which is available in several different sizes, you can customise the look using different media, fronts, fascias and mantels. Whether you’re after contemporary styling or a more traditional look, it’s easy to customise a design for your decor.

Closed gas, or balanced flue gas fireplaces, are an efficient and clean-burning option for your home. Heat & Glo, who are leaders in fireplace technology and design, design and produce these glass-fronted units in a variety of sizes and styles. Balanced flue systems use a twin skin flue, meaning that clean air is drawn from outside, and any by-products from the unit are expelled externally, ensuring that optimum indoor air quality is maintained. With a range of sizes and heating capacities, an appropriate fit can be found for your needs. Perennial favourites such as the 550TRSI and the Supreme i30 are easy to install and provide a wonderful warmth and ambience. If you are looking for something more modern, the Mezzo range offers stunning European design together with powerful performance and features. Available in three sizes and a see-through unit, the Mezzo comes with a porcelain reflective interior and LED accent lighting to add an extra element of depth to the fireplace.

There are two key distinctions when it comes to wood units – open wood or slow combustion. There is nothing quite like the flickering flames of a real wood fire, and with a slow combustion fireplace, you also have an option that is incredibly efficient and will keep your home warm.

If you are looking for an open wood fireplace, the Jetmaster Universal firebox is available in a large range of sizes to suit your home. Available as an insert, double-sided or freestanding unit, as well as a Zero Clearance option for new constructions. If you already have an existing fireplace, it is simply a matter of inserting the appropriate size box into the brick fireplace and using the existing chimney.

Slow combustion units, such as those from Quadra-Fire, Heatilator and Kemlan (proudly Australian-made and designed), offer powerful performance as both freestanding and insert models. With long burn times and high-efficiency rates, they can be used as a primary heat source. Quadra-Fire’s range features Automatic Combustion Control (ACC) technology, which delivers precision airflow management for longer, cleaner and more efficient burns with easy operation. The Heatilator Eco-Choice range by Quadra-Fire is the clear choice when looking for the highest efficiency rates. With the average market efficiency for wood heaters at 65%, the Heatilator range has a massive 85% average efficiency and is proudly Australia’s most efficient slow combustion fire range. 10% efficiency is equal to 1 tonne of firewood burnt per year, meaning that with a Heatilator, you can save up to 2 tonnes of wood each year.

Our Australian made and designed range of slow combustion fireplaces from Kemlan includes the new C900 insert and freestanding models. Offering a modern landscape design with powerful performance, the insert model has an impressive burn time of up to 12 hours and can heat up to 300m², with an ultra-low particulate rate of 0.6 grams.
